Termites
EcoSystems provides full service termite control,
including both a chemical application approach and/or a termite baiting
system! Depending on your specific preferences and construction/soil
conditions, we can recommend the right termite solution for you.
Chemical Treatment
We currently recommend a relatively new product named Termidor
as our product of choice in chemical applications. This is the first
product since Chlordane was banned in 1988 to show long term 100% control of
termites at all of The US Department of Agriculture's test sites. In
addition, its mode of action is unique. Because it is a non-repellant,
termites travel right through it and pass it along to other members of the
colony through contact. Within a much shorter period of time than
any baiting system, Termidor
will eliminate the entire colony!
In addition to its effectiveness,
Termidor
is extremely safe to use. It binds well to the soil and has no odor.
Its active ingredient, Fipronil, is generally applied at a rate of 0.06%.
This is a lower concentration of Fipronil than is found in Frontline, a
popular flea product for pets.

Baiting System
For termite problems that are
not quite right for Termidor (close proximity of a well or cistern, personal
preference, chemical difficult to apply), or if you just want to monitor for
termites, then a termite baiting system may be right for you. We recommend
one manufactured by FMC Corporation named FirstLine.
Under this program, small holes
(2" by 8") are drilled every 8 - 10 feet around the outside perimeter
of your home or business. A FirstLine
bait station is placed in the hole containing an untreated piece of wood.
The stations are then monitored on a regular basis to determine if any termite
activity is present. If termites begin feeding at one or more of the
stations, then the untreated piece of wood is replaced with one containing the
active termiticide Sulfluramid. As the colony continues to feed,
worker termites share this active ingredient with the entire colony. Once
a colony begins feeding at a bait station, complete colony elimination can be
expected within a few months.

Carpenter Ants don't actually eat wood, but use their powerful mandibles in
order to excavate galleries. Here they live, lay eggs, rear their young
and increase the size of the nest as the colony grows. They usually prefer
wood with a moisture content of over 15%, which makes areas in the home with a
moisture problem prime candidates for infestation. A Carpenter Ant seen in
the home does not automatically mean there is an inside nest present.
These ants will forage inside for food and moisture just like most other ant
species. Determining if there is a nest present and where it is are the most
important keys to Carpenter Ant control. If a nest can not be found,
control can be difficult, either by baiting or by chemical means. If you suspect
a problem, give us a call. We will perform a thorough no obligation
inspection.

Carpenter Bees resemble Bumble Bees and get their name from the fact that
they bore dime size holes in wood in order to make a nest. If you have
ever had this problem at your home, you know how frustrating it can be to to
discourage these creatures from making these holes in your wood trim, deck
railings, wooden porch furniture or wood siding. It seems that when they
choose an "ideal" home site, that all their friends and relatives also
decide to set up housekeeping. If left unchecked, it can look like a
series of Carpenter Bee condos. Although the males are very aggressive,
they are harmless since they lack a stinger.

Powderpost Beetles can be found in dried and cured lumber. Damage can
occur in rafters, joists, flooring, molding, paneling and furniture.
Sometimes a homeowner will hear rasping or ticking in the wood late at
night. They may find numerous small round or oval exit holes (1/32 to 1/16
inch) and the accumulation of powder- like frass under the holes. Adult
beetles are flattened, slender, reddish-brown to black, varying from 1/32 to 1/8
inch long. The most important factors in treating for Powderpost Beetles
is proper identification and determining whether the infestation is active or
inactive.
